Many of us spent this past weekend with special family gatherings.  Photos were taken to show off new clothes purchased for the occasion and to see how much the kids have grown since last year.  Thanks to the various expressions of social media, we got to see some of the photos that we were not present to participate in.  I would love to point you to Facebook to see the most perfect little girl in the history of little girls in her first Easter dress, but you probably have someone who is equally precious and beautiful to you.  I guess I really can’t expect that you will agree with my biased, but true, opinion of my granddaughter, but she is absolutely one of my favorite things.

Mrs. Sweetie (another of my favorites) and I spent the weekend with my dad (him, too).  Now that he is a great-grandpa, he has the new name of Big Grandpa.  We spent a good part of Saturday in the truck enjoying views of spring in the central Texas countryside.  I took some photos of some bluebonnets (another of my favorite things) and other wild flowers.  As we drove through the country, Dad told us the stories of his growing up and who owned what property.  He showed us again the creek where my Granny (his mom) was baptized about 100 years ago.  I’ve heard the stories before, but hearing Dad tell them is one of my favorite things.

Of course the weekend was not just about family gatherings.  Resurrection Sunday (Easter) is the highest and most important date on the Christian calendar  and is the reason that Christ followers began worshipping on Sunday back in the 1st century.

As we entered the doors of Central United Methodist Church in Brownwood, my mind went back one year to April 6, 2014.  My step-mother (my favorite Thingy) had recently been told that her cancer had returned with a vengeance and that her time was short.  It was the last Sunday that she felt good enough to go to church and she did the children’s sermon that morning.  I wrote my April 7, 2014 Life Matters blog (Hand me my Thingy) about her and that experience. In the early morning hours of April 24, Thursday after Resurrection Sunday, she made the trip to heaven.  She was often the topic of our conversations this weekend.

I love the Easter baskets, eggs, clothes, food, and family gatherings.  I love most the reality that, because of what Jesus did through the cross-resurrection event, our lives truly matter to God for eternity.

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 1:19, New Living Translation)

That’s my life.  That’s my purpose. That’s my favorite.
