“Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O, for grace to trust Him more!”
In 1882, Louisa Stead was enjoying a picnic on Long Island Sound with her husband and her 8 year old daughter, Lily. Hearing the cries of a drowning boy, Mr. Stead rushed to his rescue. As Louisa and Lily watched, both the boy and Mr. Stead drowned.
They lost not only husband and father, but also breadwinner. With no means of financial support, they were soon destitute.
A particular day arrived when there was neither food nor funds for the day. Louisa opened the door that morning to find that someone had left food and money on her doorstep.
That night she wrote the poem that eventually became the hymn, “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.” (click title for video)
“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.” (John 14:1, New Living Translation)
Question: When is it harder to trust God–in times of desperation or in times of abundance?
