I know that not everyone who will read this post will read it on Monday, but stick with me anyway.

I’m writing it on Monday. Whatever day you read it, you can use it to prepare for your next Monday.

There’s an old preacher joke (I’m not sure if it’s a joke about old preachers or an old joke about preachers) that says every preacher writes his letter of resignation every Monday. The hope is that he’ll tear it up by Friday. The last one written is the one that makes it to Sunday.

If you know, you know.

Two things I should clear up: I know that not every preacher is male and I know that the Monday blues are not limited to preachers.

When was the last time you heard anyone say, “I can’t wait until Monday” if Monday wasn’t the first day of their vacation?

Or how about this one: “Hang in there, baby! Monday’s coming!”

Do you know anyone who named their child Monday?

“Come on, Monday Lou! It’s time to go to school.”

I didn’t think so.

Poor Monday.

Monday is the Rodney Dangerfield of week days—it don’t get no respect. (Showed my age with that reference).

Do you know what the worst thing is about being Monday?

There’s nothing Monday can do about it.

Seriously.

We are the only ones that can help Monday overcome its Monday-ness.

And how do we do it?

On purpose.

We decide how we will treat Monday.

We decide how we will approach the week.

We can get up Monday morning thinking about how tired we are, how stressed we are over the responsibilities we know about, and how anxious we are about everything that could go wrong.

We can enter Monday already thinking about Friday.

And doing all that sets us up to treat Monday like an enemy.

Or we can choose a different approach.

“Hello, Monday. You & I are going to approach this week looking for opportunities to show up & step up. We’ll look for ways to show what we’re made of. We’re going to keep our eyes open for ways to help. Now, let’s do this!”CLICK TO TWEET

(Aside á la Jim Gaffigan: Dude has lost his mind. Talking to a day like that’s going to make it better.)

Ok! I admit it.

That kind of talk won’t change Monday at all.

But it will change us.

And as a person of faith, I’m convinced that if I approach Monday looking for ways to make Monday matter in the way I live out my faith, I’m more likely to approach six other days with the same focus.

Once I realize that there is not a single thing about a day of the week that prevents me from living the life I was made for, I can find amazing on most every day that ends with Y.
