It’s Saturday!

I don’t know if that’s good news or bad news for you.

I guess it depends on your perspective and what’s on your agenda today—and whether you are setting your own agenda or someone else has set it for you.

Maybe that’s true of every day that ends in “y.”

It seems as if something significant has happened in the past few days that is a perfect example of that reality. And apparently it’s bad news for some and good news for others.

At least that’s what I’ve observed.

As I ponder the past few days, I have some thoughts.

Surprise!

My first thought is that these results are not going to be as wonderful as some have imagined. Nor are they going to be as horrible as others have imagined.

My second thought is that we will not talk our way into agreement. No amount of sugar-coating or doomsaying will convince anyone to change their mind. And, to be brutally honest, we stink at dialogue. We’d rather shout AT and OVER each other than converse WITH one another.

My third thought is that—while I’m glad we won’t be subjected to the hateful, hyperbolic political ads for a few months—there will be plenty of venom present in other places because we live in a system that feeds on creating enmity rather than community.

Do I sound hopeful and encouraging today?

Not if I’m focusing on political solutions or an American dream.

But have I lost hope?

Absolutely not!

My hope is built on Jesus.

Jesus, who will still be King no matter which way the political winds blow.

Jesus, whose kingdom is neither centered in nor dependent upon the success of America.

Jesus, who loves and gave His life for His enemies as well as His friends—and who calls His followers to do likewise.

Jesus, who will one day return to renew and restore all things in a new heaven and earth.

That’s where my hope, encouragement, and amazingness lies.

And that’s why I’m seeking to follow His ways on every day that ends in “y.”

Saturday seems like a good day to start.

Be amazing today, my friend.
