I woke up this morning earlier than I had planned…
after not sleeping as well as I wanted. A very large sugar free soda that I finished later in the evening than I typically allow myself caffeine resulted in a double whammy (IYKYK).
I’ve been sitting and pondering my pondering for today.
On one hand, I think I’ve shared adequately since March 21 about my mom’s passing and the memorial service we had on April 26 (the original day we had planned for her 90th birthday party).
So I thought I should probably write about something else today.
On the other hand, tomorrow is Mother’s Day and it will be different than it has in my 63 years of life.
Mrs. Sweetie and I were talking about it yesterday. It’s the first Mother’s Day in our almost 41 years of marriage that we’ve had no one to call and no one to whom to mail the cards that inevitably arrived late because we didn’t mail them soon enough.
2009 was our first Mother’s Day without her mom (Mamaw). 2014 without my stepmom (Thingy). 2022 was the first one without our sweet Elsie (Sweetie’s bonus mom).
And those special friends that were like moms to us in our early years of marriage (Emma and Ruth) have been gone for a while.
Mom (Grandmother) was the last one.
And honestly, it’s just starting to sink in.
Sweetie and I have become THAT generation for our family. (I’ve been there since 2020).
And I suppose it is as it should be.
“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works— and I will proclaim your great deeds. They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness” (Psalm 145:4-7).
To my fellow travelers who have become THAT generation—it’s our turn.
To those who grieve—it’s also our turn.
None of us picked this particular time to have our turn, but we have the opportunity to choose to receive it as a gracious gift of God’s abundant goodness.
I pray that we will, and that the following generations will see Him in us.
Be amazing today, my friend.
