“What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29-31, New Living Translation)
Jesus spoke these words in the middle of a discussion about how His followers would be at risk because they followed Him. He spoke of hatred, persecution, betrayal, and even death.
I can imagine these guys, wide-eyed and gape-mouthed, reconsidering their choice to respond to His call to follow. At just about the breaking point, He says, “Hey guys! What’s a sparrow going for these days? Two for a penny? Not much, huh! But God is aware of and cares about every single one of them. He’s aware of you, too. In fact, He knows exactly how many hairs are on your head. And let me tell you a secret: He not only is aware of you, but you matter more to Him than all the sparrows combined.” (Matthew 10:29-31, Today’s Gerry Paraphrase)
Now, admittedly, the hairs on some heads would not be that hard to count. But the point Jesus was making is that nothing that ever happens to you, in you, or around you will ever take God by surprise, nor will it take you out of His care.
It’s not about the hair. It’s about the Father’s love for you.
Question: What is going on in your life that you really need to know that God notices?
