Happy Today’s-the-Day-Saturday, friends!

Yep.

Today’s the day!

For what, you ask?

Well, it could be the day of our 7 year-old grandson’s last baseball game of the season.

It is that day, but that’s not the one I’m talking about.

It could be our granddaughter’s 12th birthday party.

It is that day, but that’s not the one I’m talking about.

It could be the first Saturday in October—and the cooler weather associated with it.

It is that day, but that’s not the one I’m talking about.

This morning I read Hebrews 3.

Verse 13 caught my eye.

“But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today,’ so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

Today’s the day to encourage one another.

We can’t redo yesterday. The opportunities for encouragement are passed.

We can’t yet do tomorrow. The best we can do is make plans.

Today’s the day.

Today’s the day to remind each other not to become hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

For the next month, we (in the USA) are going to be inundated with political advertisements—online, on tv, in our mailboxes, in our neighbors’ yards.

Most of those are based in deception (half-truths, innuendo, or flat out falsehoods) that are intentionally designed to harden us against an individual or a political party.

They play on our fear and self-centeredness and do their best to convince us to dig in and resist those who think, believe, and practice differently.

They harden us against our neighbors.

They harden us against those created in the image of God and for whom Jesus died.

And they tempt us to support what we know is not right, because at least OUR wrong is not as bad as THEIR wrong.

Sin’s deception.

Here’s the truth: we’ll still have the same neighbors after all the ballots have been tabulated and victors announced.

We’ll still have the same calling from Jesus to love those neighbors.

We’ll still have an imperfect—and sometimes unjust—system in which we must seek to live in the Way of Jesus.

Why not start today encouraging one another to soften our hearts toward one another.

Why not start today praying for—and working toward—neighborhoods filled with grace, love, and fellowship.

Today’s a good day to overcome evil with good.

Today’s the day.

Be amazing today, my friend.
