“When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:6-8, New Living Translation)

Why me?

How many times have we asked that question in times of disappointment … pain … grief … illness … mistreatment … __________ (fill in your own word)?

How few times have we asked why in times of blessing?  Have we ever bothered to ask why Jesus died for us?  That, to me, seems to be the Ultimate Why.

The Apostle Paul gave us the answer in Romans 5:8: because of God’s great love for us.  And it was not in any way because we were good enough, or we deserved it, or because we had proven that we were worthy of His love.

“… while we were still sinners …”  Let that sink in.

I read a portion of an ancient Greek Hymn this morning.  By that, I mean I read the 19th Century English translation. My Greek is a little rusty (or maybe completely rusted shut).

Let Thy blood in mercy poured

Let Thy gracious body broken,

Be to me, O gracious Lord,

Of boundless love the token.

Thou didst give Thyself for me,

Now I give myself to Thee
