It seems that electronic gadgets have taken over our lives.  I won’t take time to list all the different kinds.  I’ll simply say that a day with a malfunctioning iPhone, iPad, or laptop is a mighty frustrating day for me.

Even though I use these tools A LOT and am pretty proficient with them, I am not really a “techie.” I know how to do what I need to do, but I am not good at troubleshooting if something is not working.  As an answer to that, I have a process: “When in doubt, reboot.”  Turn it off, turn it back on, and start over.

Come to think of it, that’s not a bad approach when life goes awry. Stop, shut down and refocus, start again with a fresh perspective.

Hannah Whithall Smith (1832-1911), in her book, The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life,” wrote:

“A Christian who was in a great deal of trouble was recounting to another the various efforts he had made to find deliverance, and concluded by saying, ‘But it has all been in vain, and there is literally nothing left for me to do now but to trust the Lord.’ ‘Alas!’ exclaimed his friend in a tone of the deepest commiseration, as though no greater risk were possible,–‘Alas! Has it come to that!’”

Doesn’t it always come to that? Really?  Why do we so often make trusting God the last resort?

I can’t tell you how much time I have spent trying to make something work, only to discover that it was taken care of by a reboot.

So, here’s a reboot prayer: “Ok, God, I am making a mess of this.  I’m going to stop now and rest in  You.  Refocus and renew me by Your grace. In Your perfect timing, restart and guide me in Your will and purpose. I trust You.”

Question: What area of your life needs a reboot today?
