“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13, New American Standard)
This familiar verse often comforts and encourages those who find themselves in challenging situations. It is also misused by some who would suggest that we can do anything we want if we just trust Jesus enough.
Check it out in context: “But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity. Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Nevertheless, you have done well to share with me in my affliction.” (verses 10-14)
Time and space available in this format prevent unpacking the even larger context. Here’s the abridged version: The church in Philippi had sent some ministry support to Paul. He was grateful for it, not only for how it helped his ministry, but for how their giving spirit empowered their own ministry. He also reminded them that God was ultimately the source of his strength and would supply whatever was necessary for Paul to fulfill his calling.
I wrote this little chorus over 20 years ago when I was worship leader at a preteen camp:
“It’s impossible with me, but it’s possible with God. I can do all things through Christ. For whatever He asks, He’ll give me strength for the task. I can do all things through Christ.”
That’s really the point. It is not that we can do anything we want if we will trust Jesus enough. It is that He will supply whatever is necessary for us to fulfill the mission to which He calls us.
Question: How have you seen God supply what is necessary for you to follow Him?
